Lomira wrestling ends Campbellsport's legendary streak

Lomira knew it was going to take a special effort from its group to do what no other Flyway team had done in 230 tries.

The Lions got key bonus-point wins, which spurred them on to a 40-34 win, snapping Campbellsport's Flyway dual winning streak on Friday night.

Coach Adam Kinyon said last year's dual against Campbellsport was the perfect reminder to his team that every bonus point matters in a dual against the Cougars. Last year, Lomira lost 32-31 and felt they left points out there.

Kinyon said he challenged his captains, Marshall Hanke and Marek Lisiecki.

"All week I talked to them in private, 'We need 6 [points] from you guys,'" Kinyon said. "We only got 5 from each of them last year and we lost the dual by 1. That makes a difference.

"[They] knew they needed to continue to be the leaders of this team, show everyone else that they're wrestling for their teammates, get six and get the job done."

Hanke and Lisiecki weren't going to let that happen this year.

Hanke pinned Anthony Hughley in just 44 seconds at 138 and Lisiecki pinned Aydryan Meilahn in 3:04 at 150. Sandwiched between those falls was a forfeit win for Colin Weber. Kinyon called them the three-headed monster.

It was an 18-point stretch for Lomira that built a 22-6 lead.

"The mindset was our top three wrestlers need a pin, we need 6 to get ahead," Lisiecki said. "We were in the practice room, and I told everyone, 'We need 6. Not for you, we need it for the team.'"

The other big stretch for the Lions started at 175 with junior Kolton Wagoner, who was wrestling up from his usual weight class.

Wagoner and Campbellsport's Porter Klotz went back-and-forth for the first two periods, during which Wagoner built an 11-5 lead.

In the third, Wagoner turned it on, ripping off 11 points and clinching the 22-6 technical fall. He said third period matches come down to the better-conditioned wrestler.

"I was pumped," Wagoner said. "Giving up 10 pounds, that's a lot, especially to do that in a dual like this. The gas tank is really where it's at in a time like this."

Lomira (10-9 overall, 4-0 in Flyway) then got wins at 190 and 215. Jayden Gibson earned a 13-9 decision against Hudson McCarty and Trent Kulczewski pinned Zach Zimdahl in 1:52.

Kinyon said Gibson's win, while only a 3-point decision, could have flipped the match the other way had he not been able to close it out.

"Jayden, too, has been getting so much better even over the past few weeks," Kinyon said. "I counted on him to perform in whichever weight class he ended up at tonight and he put it all out there. He stayed out of the bad ties that could have ended in a different match."

Those three straight wins rebuilt Lomira's lead to 36-16, which meant the Lions needed just one more win to clinch the dual.

Kinyon said there was no doubt in his mind that they'd get it at 113 with sophomore Jordan Lisiecki.

"Once we won 215, I knew we had it because Jordan Lisiecki does not lose," Kinyon said. "Whoever you put him out there against, he's going to find a way to win, he's going to find a way to dominate that match, and he did.

"He performed tonight right when we needed him."

Lisiecki went out and was in control the entire match against Jacob Allickson, earning an 8-0 major decision and sealing the rivalry win.

Marek Lisiecki said he knew his younger brother would get the job done.

"Colin Weber and I, we looked at each other and said, 'I think we won,' even before Jordan went out there because he's just such a dominant wrestler," Lisiecki said.

Campbellsport (7-3, 4-1) made Lomira work for the win. The Cougars battled and got pins from Ben Sabish at 132, Conner Sitzberger at 165, Brock Bentz at heavyweight and Logan Knoeck at 106.

Hanke said the team has put in the time in the wrestling room this year and the win is evidence of that.

"Coming here and being able to beat them on our turf feels really good," Hanke said. "We're in the room all the time, long hours, always working hard, we're sweating together. It just feels really good to beat them this year."
