Austin Thoreson turned it on in the second half on Tuesday night.

The senior scored 14 second-half points to help get Mayville over the line with a 76-72 nonconference home win against Winneconne.

Thoreson, who finished with 21, was one of three Mayville scorers in double digits, a testament to the depth that Mayville carries.

Mayville (2-4) needed everybody, including Joren Schlender and Braxton Wiese, who finished with 23 and 11 points, respectively.

“We’re starting to scratch the surface of what the depth is, they work hard every day and we’re starting to get into the flow” coach Brett Kirmse said. “Braxton Wiese, [I] can’t say it enough, man. He was all over the place”

In addition to his scoring output, Wiese saved his hardest work for the defensive end. He also attacked the boards.

The first half started slowly for the Cardinals, but eventually they found their footing, ripping off a 16-3 run that ended in a Winneconne timeout about the 10:00 mark.

“We did a good job today of staying even keeled,” Kirmse said.

Kirmse cited his team’s ability to work hard in practice, and the situations that they run while working as the reason they came prepared in the game.

The Wolves (1-6) came out of halftime fierce, for Winneconne went on a 23-12 run in the first eight minutes of the second half. Brody Schaeffer scored a game-high 28 for the Wolves.

“It’s been about playing a complete game,” Schlender said.

Mayville did just as Schlender said and finished out the game strong.
